Feed Your Cells!

September 1st, 2010

When you think about algae, what comes to mind? Green? Slimy? Alive? Well, algae is one of the BEST and most nutritive things you can consume. Most contain over 60%  COMPLETE plant protein and this is important for vegans and vegetarians since they especially need complete protein. Even if you are not veggie, it’s still important to eat foods that reach your cells. Why? Because if your cells are starving, your body cannot function at optimal levels and support you and your every day activities.

I have been hearing a lot about a product called E3-Live lately. Let me first say that I am NOT selling it. I am just speaking about it. I haven’t even taken it too many times but I have been gathering information (as this is what I do, so I can report back to YOU!) about it because I think it is a superlicious miracle food! It only grows in one special place in Oregon and it’s a whole, living food provided by Mother Nature herself and contains more chlorophyll than wheatgrass, and abundance of omega-3 and omega-6 and as I mentioned, this also supplies over 60% complete plant protein. The magic of E3-Live is that if you take the liquid version, it goes straight to your brain and you can actually FEEL an instant rush and gain mental clarity. I think this is my favorite thing about the product-you can actually feel instant results. It’s said to be extremely helpful for Alzheimer’s since it actually goes right to the brain and nourishes it and works on neurotransmitters, rewiring and bringing blood to areas in need. It’s said to be 97% absorbable  by the body, meaning, it’s bioavialable and your body can use it right away and use all of it’s amazing nutritive properties. Algaes such as E3-Live and other sea plant products such as spirulina, nori, and even wheatgrass are all good for combating ailments such as fatigue, addictions, ADD, immune system problems, weight problems, and especially are good for restoring a sense of vitality and mental clarity.

It is important to know that what you eat should essentially be bioavailable, live foods. Eating foods that serve you on a cellular level are much more rewarding and you will FEEL the difference when you choose living foods. Live foods have a much more potent vibrational energy and this is extremely important for how the body functions. If you are constantly munching on foods that cannot reach your cells (ie. acidic type foods such as red meat, processed, refined or trans fat ridden products, etc), your body will begin to break down and we know this can be evident in many ways. When your cells are starving, this can manifest itself as fatigue, low blood sugar, weight gain (really!), and most drastically, DIS-EASE.

Algaes and sea plants provide the body with tons of vitamins, minerals, nutrients and enzymes it needs to function properly. They also contain EFA’s (essential fatty acids), which protect your heart and arteries, provide you with energy and help keep your immune system healthy and thriving!

One simple trick for feeding, or at least quenching your cells is to add some Celtic sea salt to your filtered water. Salt helps the water reach your cells effectively and this is a good start to nourishing your body on a cellular level. Let’s face it, we cannot do a whole lot without the very essence of life: water.

Feed your cells what they need to thrive and your body will thank you. Be conscious of what you eat every day and think about how your body will be absorbing it. That donut and cup of coffee is not truly serving you or speaking to your cells lovingly…what it’s saying to your cells is “I don’t care if you starve!” Feed your body what it truly can USE. Live foods are Mother Nature’s gift to us and we all have the power to make the most healthful and useful choices. As I always say, it’s what you do 80% of the time that counts, so just do your best and love yourself every step of the way. I will tell you from experience though, it’s a LOT easier to love yourself when you FEEL good.

Let me know if anyone has tried E3-Live and what you think or if you have any other thoughts, suggestions or rants about plant proteins like that one. Oh, if you do want to try it, Whole Foods definitely carries it, along with most health food stores. It’s definitely not cheap, but it’s way cheaper than paying for the cost of failed health. Don’t be afraid to invest in YOU. You are most certainly worth it! :)

Updates and thanks!

August 10th, 2010

Hi friends,

Hope this finds you healthy, happy and well fed! I still cannot believe we are in the full swing of summer-it certainly doesn’t feel like it here in Los Angeles. This year has not been so dreadfully hot (thank goodness!). I hope you are enjoying your summer where ever YOU are.

I first off wanted to acknowledge all the new registered users of the site (and you know who you are)-thank you SO much for taking the time to read the blog! I hope you have found it interesting, applicable and fun! If you have any comments, suggestions or specific topics you want to know about, please email me at: healingthrufood@gmail.com

So, instead of writing this page specifically on one topic, product or theme, I thought I would just give you a run down of what I am doing, what I am using to cook (or uncook) with, where I am eating, who I am spending my time with, etc…hopefully this won’t bore you to tears, but I felt an update was in order.

The trip I mentioned in my last blog to Sicily will be postponed until Spring of 2011, so start saving NOW! It is going to be absolutely beautiful and such the perfect time to go to Italy. I hope you will consider joining me and Attavola for a delicious tour of Mediterranean foods you simply cannot get here in the states. More details to come but I’m here to answer any questions you may have about the tour.

What have I been cooking? Well, I have been doing a lot of kale chips lately; mostly cheesy kale chips! They are so fun! Just today I modified the nut cheese recipe because although I liked the way it tasted before, I simply did not have a red bell pepper, so I hope they turn out okay. All I did was take about 1 cup of cashews (best to soak them for about an hour first), juice of 1 lemon, 1-2 tbsp nutritional yeast (there is a blog written just about nutritional yeast in the archives if you are inclined to read about it here: http://healingthrufood.com/?p=19 -it’s fascinating and SO delicious!), some sea salt and a bit of water. Process in food processor until smooth and mix into washed and dried kale that has been cut into chunks. Dehydrate for about 8 hours. Yes, it’s quite a long time, but it is SO worth it. Trust me. And everyone I make try them LOVES them (yes, I make people taste my food, against their will-it’s awesome!) They even suggest I start selling them-what do you guys think? ;)

I also started sprouting which has been so much fun! My dear friend Renee (who you may know from my Facebook posts) came for a visit and we sprouted some mung beans together and I am telling you, they are SO delicious in salads (or just plain!). I am currently sprouting some kamut berries to attempt my first raw bread-hopefully the olive kamut bread from Jenny Ross’s book (she is the chef at 118 Degrees in Costa Mesa, CA)-I think that is my favorite raw bread so far.

I have successfully tasted the top 3 raw food restaurants on the West Side-all are in Santa Monica.  First up: Planet RAW -Juliano’s restaurant-okay, LOVE the food and the intimate atmosphere. The service is always nice, too, BUT, it is a tad pretentious as most people do report. I’m sorry to say it! I still eat there and love it and always will because it truly is unique and a delightful eating experience, and plus, I cannot live without their Cheezy Kelp or their home made kombucha (OMG!). They really know what they are doing and I definitely support them.

Next up is Better Life Cuisine, which is more like a little cafe. It’s very casual, the portions are HUGE and their food is divine. Their lasagna, nachos, and wraps are definitely creative and tasty, but make sure to save room for dessert-try the spirulina pie or the cinnamon roll-I don’t even know how they do what they do but it’s worth the drive over the hill to snag dessert there. The downfall of the place is that it is shared with a yoga studio, so sometimes as you walk to the bathroom, it can smell like feet. :( Don’t let that turn you off-the food is so worth it!

Last, but certainly not least (and I believe this is my fave of the 3) is Euphoria Loves Rawvolution. This quaint little cafe is tucked away on Main St. in Santa Monica and it is so lovely inside. The atmosphere is definitely my favorite of the 3 mentioned. It’s homey, with an earthy feel. The food is creative (I have tried the coconut jerky, Thai coconut soup (cold), nachos, Cocophoria sandwich, and a bowl they had on special which featured kale, seaweed, nut cheese and tofu that was made out of nuts as well). Also, their dessert display is magical. Lots of chocolate treats, cookies and pies to choose from. The black and white cookie-not so much, but everything else I have tried has been divine.

So, there you have my mini reviews of 3 “rawsome” raw food restaurants in LA. I urge you to try them all and let me know what you think!

I also wanted to mention some of my latest kitchen staples as I am learning that I cannot live without them and I will explain why…

1. Barlean’s Extra Virgin Coconut Oil-it’s 100% organic, has a nice, rich flavor and although it is a bit costly, I believe you have to invest in a good quality coconut oil. This can be used not only in your foods, but on your skin and in your hair. It’s absolutely divine! I use it to make a different kind of kale chips (kale chips coated with coconut oil, sea salt and raw honey), in quinoa, on sweet potatoes, and as a skin moisturizer. Really! Barlean’s also makes probably the BEST quality flaxseed oil on the market. Flaxseed oil provides you with essential fatty acids (EFA’s). We need EFA’s (omega-3′s) for proper brain function, healthy skin, hair and nails, and flax also provides protein and phytonutrients. You can use this to top salads or even put it in your smoothies.

2. Amazing Grass Green Superfood Powder (chocolate)-this is a long time favorite and staple in my kitchen. I have been doing a lot of smoothies in the mornings for breakfast and here is what goes into it as of late:

-6-8 oz almond milk

-1 scoop AG powder

-1/2 frozen banana

-1 tbsp raw honey

-cinnamon

-1 tsp coffee grounds

-1 tbsp almond or sunflower seed butter

-a few ice cubes

3. Maranatha ‘No Sitr’ Almond Butter-this is hands down my favorite almond butter and I eat it EVERY day! I love that it is pre-stirred! I use it in my smoothies, on apples or just eat it by the spoonful with some raw honey (my guilty pleasure).

4. Maintoba Harvest Shelled Hemp Seeds-hemp, just like flax, provides us with a healthy dose of omega-3′s. These nutrient dense seeds pack quite a powerful punch when thrown on salads, cereal or yogurt. You can eat them plain as well and feel like a little bird. :) 2 tbsp provides you with 11 g of protein! Take THAT meat eaters! :)

5. Pacific Organic Almond Milk-I honestly love the taste of almond milk better than rice, which I had been using forever. It’s creamier, thicker and overall, is just more pleasing to me. I have to have it and go through about 2-3 boxes per week. I have found that Trader Joe’s has it at the best price, so although I don’t do a ton of my shopping there anymore, I do go there for my milk. I haven’t gotten into making my own almond milk yet because almonds seem to be so costly (if you buy raw and organic), so I admit, I am cheap and lazy sometimes, so I just buy it in a box. Sue me. I’d rather spend my time dehydrating kale. ;)

I could go on and on, but I don’t want to risk losing your attention! Plus, I know you have to get to the grocery store to get the items mentioned above, right? ;)  Again, please feel free to contact me at any time at healingthrufood@gmail.com I welcome questions, comments, praises or criticism and look forward to hearing from you… Thank you again so very much for supporting HTF and reading. It means the world to have people take notice and if this reaches one person and helps them in any way achieve better health, I have done my job as a health practitioner. Many blessings and enjoy those beautiful summer nights!

Mangia Mediterranean! September 2010 Tour of Sicily

July 26th, 2010

Last year I had the pleasure of living and working in Sicily and got to experience culture, food and people at their finest. Sicily is full of amazing and beautiful treasures and I feel I only scratched the surface of what lies there. There is a book I am reading currently called The Jungle Effect by Dr. Daphne Miller and it’s all about cold spots for disease. A cold spot is a location with a very low incidence (compared to a hot spot, which has a very high incidence) of disease. Italy and Greece are cold spots for heart disease. This is mainly because of the foods they eat. Although some of the foods may be calorie dense foods (olive oil, olives, cheese, etc), they have many healthful properties as well. They are not highly processed and raped of all their health benefits the way most foods produced here in the states are. You know where your food is coming from and it’s all natural. Sure, they have some processed items, mostly due to American influence, but the majority of the foods you will find (in Sicily, and I am assuming Greece, but I have not yet visited Greece-someday, hopefully!), come from the locals who take great pride in the foods they provide for consumption.

So, with out further ado, I present to you, the Mediterranean Goodness Tour! Come join for an intimate tour and see Sicily unlike a typical tourist-see it like a local! Our tour will spoil you with spa like accommodations, visits to the beautiful cities of Palermo, Ragusa, Mazza del Vallo, Erice, Trapani and Marsala. Oh and the food you will eat!! You will visit local honey, olive oil, wine, cheese AND chocolate producers and TASTE why Italians are in much better shape than us Americans! Additionally, you will take a cooking class with a professional chef getting to shop for ingredients and cook a traditional Sicilian meal!

There is a reason why Italians are so healthy and stress free, and believe me, a lot of it is from the energy in and around the  food. Eating is not done the same way as it is done here…it is an experience everyone should take part in. Italians know HOW to eat. And believe me, it’s not all about pizza and pasta. It’s about creating simple dishes made with local and fresh ingredients and most importantly, made with love. The saying “you are what you eat” really rings true here.

Come experience eating at its finest and take time to really indulge in life’s simplest, yet most meaningful past time. Food=love.

Tour dates are Sept 21-Oct 1. Email me for itinerary and cost information at healingthrufood@gmail.com. Eligible for 20% off if you sign up through Healing Thru Food!

Say CHEESE!

July 17th, 2010

So, I never intended to go dairy free, because I was a HUGE cheese lover. Brie, cheddar, muenster, mild, smelly, soft or hard…there was NO way I was going to give up that creamy, luscious, melty goodness. Heck, it made the perfect snack, topping or additive to most food choices. But, since I ADDED in other things, vs taking them away, the dairy just sort of fell off and now I don’t really think about it too much.

I wanted to talk about this cool new product I stumbled upon recently because I think it’s SO tasty and it satisfies my cheese craving (if any, as they really are rare these days…I’m a chocoholic, not a cheese-o-holic, but sometimes, it’s a nice flavor to include in foods).

In the refrigerated section of Whole Foods, they have a whole area devoted to ‘fake’ cheeses, and let’s face it, most of them taste like slightly tastier versions of plastic with cheese coating. They don’t melt and they add nothing to the meal-in fact, they may even take away because they can be so unpalatable.

But alas, amidst in that soy/veggie/fake cheese world, you can look for a little cream cheese looking package of something called We Can’t Say it’s Cheese. This product is so good! It’s not like a cheese you would cut (no pun intended), it’s more like a spread, but hey, that’s good enough for me. It’s not raw, but it is the following: vegan, gluten / wheat free, dairy free, soy free, has no trans fat, has 60 calories in 2 tbsp, 0 cholesterol, 0 sugar, has 10% calcium, and 2 g of protein per serving. It’s made from (get this) whole grain oatmeal! Weird, right? Tasty? YES!

The ingredients include: non-GMO whole grain oatmeal, oil, pimentos, nutritional yeast (yay!), sea salt, and depending on which flavor you try (there are 4 different kinds-I will post link to product info), some different ingredients are used.

I use it in wraps with hummus and veggies and make it more like a meal, or snack on it, just dipping raw veggies such as broccoli or jicama in it. I am sure you can get even more creative than I am and use it as a sauce over pasta or rice-hey, why not?

Just because you give up dairy, does not mean there are not fun and tasty alternatives out there! And even if you still eat regular cheese, I urge you to try something completely different. You never know! This might hook you and you may not crave the other stuff anymore.

Here is the link to We Can’t Say it’s Cheese: http://www.wayfarefoods.com/node/5

…and here is a link to the ingredients: http://www.wayfarefoods.com/content/ingredients as it’s always important to read labels and get informed about what goes into your mouth and into your body. Don’t just look at the nutritional information-look at what the product is MADE of! :)

I personally like the Hickory Smoked Cheddar-Style-yum!

Let me know what you guys think, even if it’s just a ‘cheesy’ little note saying you would never try it again-I want to know that you are open and tasting things that are brought into your consciousness…obviously, if you are reading this blog page, you are someone who is keen on getting healthy info, so here ya go! I’d love to hear from you at healingthrufood@gmail.com

(Un)cooking is SO much fun!

July 12th, 2010

Greetings happy & healthy people,

I had to share a short little note with you about my new favorite ‘cook’ book called Raw Energy by Stephanie Tourles. I am having the best time making delicious recipes from this book!

I had breakfast at this restaurant called Cru in Silverlake, CA a few months ago and I swear, it was the most amazing thing I had ever tasted. At that time, I had not been so much into raw, but was so curious about getting more into it and Cru is a raw food restaurant (and a VERY notable one indeed-I highly recommend it if you are in the area: http://crusilverlake.com/). What I had for breakfast was this bowl of groats (the whole grain oat with the outer hull removed-they can be found in the bulk bins at your favorite health food store ) that had pumpkin seeds, nuts, goji berries and other yumminess in it.  Before that, I was eating and recommending a lot of steel cut oats, but groats are SO much tastier and take the same amount of effort as soaking your steel cuts and prepping them. The groats need to be soaked as well, but you don’t even need to bother with water measurements, as they are just soaking (you want the water to cover about an inch above the grains). In the morning, you rinse them well and combine them in a food processor with some tasty additives such as raw honey, cinnamon, almonds, strawberries or other berries. Really, the possibilities are endless and this makes an amazing power packed raw food breakfast that will nourish you and sustain you BIG time.

Another recipe I tried last night (and adored!) was a Tahitian Mango Ginger Soup. Here is the delicious recipe:

3 medium ripe mangoes peeled and pitted (about 3 cups) *note, mangoes do not have to be purchased organic as they are not a highly contaminated fruit

juice of 1 orange, tangerine or tangelo (about 1/3 cup)

1/4 cup filtered water

2 tbsp fresh lime juice

1 tbsp raw honey

1 tsp peeled and minced ginger-root

1/4 tsp curry powder

1/4 tsp sea salt

3 mint sprigs for garnish (optional)

Put all ingredients in a blender (or food processor). Blend on medium (or pulse for a bit) until very smooth and pretty thick. About 60 seconds. For the best flavor, chill about 4 hrs before serving. Can be stored for 48 hrs in tightly sealed container but mine is practically gone! It will NOT last that long, I swear! :p

I also recently got a dehydrator (after wanting one FOREVER!) and this gave me a new way to enjoy yams, since I totally enjoy them cooked, but am trying to stick to raw. This innovative book presented me with a recipe for Sweet Potato Chips! Dehydrating lets you enjoy the foods without destroying the nutritive and helpful enzymes that accompany them in nature. Excessive heat kills off these enzymes and leaves your foods nutritionally void.

You may be intimidated by raw food or ‘uncooking’, but just start simple. You probably already consume raw foods without even considering them as ‘raw’, such as salads, hummus, fresh salsas, cut up fruit or veggies, etc. It’s getting creative and putting these together to make something different is where the fun comes in! :)

I urge you to TRY! If you are interested in this book, check out www.stephanietourles.com or you can always look for this or other raw food ‘cook’ books on www.half.com

If you have any questions about incorporating more raw food into your eating lifestyle, I am here to help! You can always e-mail me at: healingthrufood@gmail.com

Thanks for reading and have a RAWsome day!

Sharing ‘juicy’ info; Juice Plus and why I love it!

June 27th, 2010

Hi friends!

I wanted to share some info with you about my fave new product, Juice Plus! This amazing supplement supplies 17 servings of fruits and veggies along with oat and rice bran. It’s all organic and whole food based and the fruits and veggies are allowed to vine ripen before being plucked when they are not ready, thus supplying the very BEST in enzymes and nutrients.

Juice Plus made sense to me because I know a lot of people who have been taking it for YEARS (one being a very dear and close friend of mine-and she has been giving it to her 4 year old for 2 + years as well)! I love juicing, as most of you know, if you follow me on Facebook I tend to mention it a bunch, but it’s unrealistic for me to tote my Champion juicer with me everywhere I go and I am typically ALWAYS on the move like a buzzing little bee.

Juice Plus acts as a stellar foundation and compliment to a healthy lifestyle providing the very basics of what we need. Did you know that 93% of children do not get at least 3 servings of fruits and veggies per day??? This is SAD. The RDA for fruits and veggies is currently 10-13 servings per day and we cannot make our kids eat 3 bloody servings?? This is where something like Juice Plus comes in. It is in no way, shape or form a substitute for healthful eating. I like to recommend it (1. because I personally take it) because it is like a healthy insurance policy for your body. Your body NEEDS the nutrients provided by fruts and vegetables but sadly, on average, we Americans are not getting enough-not in the very least!

Listen, if my dad can start on this product, ANYONE can. This is a man who HATES all fruits and veggies except for peas and broccoli w/ Hollandaise sauce. Super healthy, right? WRONG. But now, he at least has his bases covered. I meet people like him every day, that dislike fruits and vegetables and are not functioning at their highest capacity. Everyone deserves to feel good and everyone’s body deserves the very bare nutritional minimum! On the flip side, I meet others who absolutely LOVE their fruits and veggies. Well, then this is even better! Taking Juice Plus just enhances all the good you are already practicing. It’s a win-win! Fruits and veggies work to enhance our GOOD chemistry, meaning, they ward off oxidative stress from free radicals. These can put a lot of strain on our cells and cell mutations are what cause cancer. The more antioxidants we have, the better and we can NEVER have too many!

A word about the Juice Plus Children’s Health Study… I LOVE this product because they are conducting a large scale, multi-year survey to see if adding in a whole foods based supplement can improve children’s health. In the hopes to enroll thousands of children, this incredible company offers to sponser 1 child (per parent) ages 4-18 (or 19+ if they are a full time student), for up to 3 years! Meaning, they will GIVE your child the product FREE for up to 3 years as long as a parent our guardian partipates and takes it too. This, to me, shows the level of commitment they are willing to give to our ever so needy youth. Remember that 93% statistic?!? Change is in order and this is a simple way to start.

If you guys have followed me since the first blog, you would know that I do not push products or talk about anything I do not believe in whole heartedly. In fact, the only other product I mention from time to time  is Amazing Grass because I absolutely LOVE it, use it every day and think it’s a great recommendation for everyone who is reading this.  I stand by my words and I would never recommend anything I have not personally tried!

If you have any questions about Juice Plus for yourself or signing up your child for the study, feel free to email me at: healingthrufood@gmail.com

You can also click the link to my Juice Plus website (www.dorisharesjuiceplus.com) on the right side of the home page. More information is available on that site, so play around, watch the video and check it out for yourself. My job as a nutrition educator is just that; to educate.

Stay ripe and juicy! ~Dori

A Powerful Combo: Honey & Cinnamon

June 10th, 2010

Greetings healthy honeys!

I apologize for my laps in checking in with you on the site! I know a lot of you are connected to HTF via Facebook  and Twitter and I have gotten a tad lazy since it’s easy to just do a quick little blurb there! But I also know lots of you like the substance, so I am sorry to disappoint and leave you hanging without something more meaty (or veggie :) ) to read.

I am still quite lazy (or pressed for time,  as most of us are these days), so I am going to share an article that was shared with me only because I literally go through a jar of honey per WEEK and sprinkle everything I can with cinnamon, which I think is so tasty and magical.

I actually HAVE been on a honey quest for a few weeks now as I…tasting all kinds of different ones and trying to find my favorite. I am having a moral issue with it because I am constantly on the look out for RAW, LOCAL, ORGANIC and WILDFLOWER and most health food stores carry a combo of MOST, meaning, I have found mostly RAW, ORGANIC, WILDFLOWER…made in Canada, or from Vermont. Well, that isn’t going to do much for allergies that are prone to the areas I am living in. Honey is one of those delicious and magical products that can help naturally combat allergies if you are getting the honey from your town, as it contains the pollens and flowers from your region helping you build immunities to it. Pretty cool, huh?

Well, without going off too much on my own rant, I will post this article and  you can have a look yourself at all the beneficial properties of honey AND cinnamon as it states that as a combo, it can relieve ailments such as high cholesterol, arthritis, indigestion, cancer and fatigue-just to name a few…

Honey is the only food on the planet that will not spoil or rot. It will do what some call turning to sugar… In reality honey is always honey.. However, when left in a cool dark place for a long time it will do what I rather call “crystallizing”. When this happens I loosen the lid, boil some water, and sit the honey container in the hot water, turn off the heat and let it liquefy. It is then as good as it ever was. Never boil honey or put it in a microwave. To do so will kill the enzymes in the honey.

Cinnamon and Honey
Bet the drug companies won’t like this one getting around. Facts on Honey and Cinnamon: It is found that a mixture of honey and Cinnamon cures most diseases Honey is produced in most of the countries of the world. Scientists of today also accept honey as a ‘Ram Ban’ (very effective) medicine for all kinds of diseases. Honey can be used without any side effects for any kind of diseases.

Today’s science says that even though honey is sweet, if taken in the right dosage as a medicine, it does not harm diabetic patients. Weekly World News, a magazine in Canada , in its issue dated 17 January,1995 has given the following list of diseases that can be cured by honey and cinnamon as researched by western scientists:

HEART DISEASES:
Make a paste of honey and cinnamon powder, apply on bread, instead of jelly and jam, and eat it regularly for breakfast. It reduces the cholesterol in the arteries and saves the patient from heart attack. Also, those who have already had an attack, if they do this process daily, they are kept miles away from the next attack. Regular use of the above process relieves loss of breath and strengthens the heart beat. In America and Canada , various nursing homes have treated patients successfully and have found that as you age, the arteries and veins lose their flexibility and get clogged; honey and cinnamon revitalize the arteries and veins.

ARTHRITIS:
Arthritis patients may take daily, morning and night, one cup of hot water with two spoons of honey and one small teaspoon of cinnamon powder. If taken regularly even chronic arthritis can be cured. In a recent research conducted at the Copenhagen University, it was found that when the doctors treated their patients with a mixture of one tablespoon Honey and half teaspoon Cinnamon powder before breakfast, they found that within a week, out of the 200 people so treated, practically 73 patients were totally relieved of pain, and within a month, mostly all the patients who could not walk or move around because of arthritis started walking without pain.

BLADDER INFECTIONS:
Take two tablespoons of cinnamon powder and one teaspoon of honey in a glass of lukewarm water and drink it. It destroys the germs in the bladder.

CHOLESTEROL:
Two tablespoons of honey and three teaspoons of Cinnamon Powder mixed in 16 ounces of tea water, given to a cholesterol patient, was found to reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood by 10 percent within two hours As mentioned for arthritic patients, if taken three times a day, any chronic cholesterol is cured… According to information received in the said Journal, pure honey taken with food daily relieves complaints of cholesterol.

COLDS:
Those suffering from common or severe colds should take one tablespoon lukewarm honey with 1/4 spoon cinnamon powder daily for three days. This process will cure most chronic cough, cold, and clear the sinuses.

UPSET STOMACH:
Honey taken with cinnamon powder cures stomach ache and also clears stomach ulcers from the root.

GAS:
According to the studies done in India and Japan , it is revealed that if Honey is taken with cinnamon powder the stomach is relieved of gas.

IMMUNE SYSTEM:
Daily use of honey and cinnamon powder strengthens the immune system and protects the body from bacteria and viral attacks. Scientists have found that honey has various vitamins and iron in large amounts.. Constant use of Honey strengthens the white blood corpuscles to fight bacterial and viral diseases.

INDIGESTION:
Cinnamon powder sprinkled on two tablespoons of honey taken before food relieves acidity and digests the heaviest of meals

INFLUENZA:
A scientist in Spain has proved that honey contains a natural ‘ Ingredient’ which kills the influenza germs and saves the patient from flu..

LONGEVITY:
Tea made with honey and cinnamon powder, when taken regularly, arrests the ravages of old age. Take four spoons of honey, one spoon of cinnamon powder, and three cups of water and boil to make like tea. Drink 1/4 cup, three to four times a day It keeps the skin fresh and soft and arrests old age. Life spans also increase and even a 100 year old, starts performing the chores of a 20-year-old.

PIMPLES:
Three tablespoons of honey and one teaspoon of cinnamon powder paste. Apply this paste on the pimples before sleeping and wash it next morning with warm water. If done daily for two weeks, it removes pimples from the root..

SKIN INFECTIONS:
Applying honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts on the affected parts cures eczema, ringworm and all types of skin infections.

WEIGHT LOSS:
Daily in the morning one half hour before breakfast on an empty stomach, and at night before sleeping, drink honey and cinnamon powder boiled in one cup of water. If taken regularly, it reduces the weight of even the most obese person. Also, drinking this mixture regularly does not allow the fat to accumulate in the body even though the person may eat a high calorie diet.

CANCER:
Recent research in Japan and Australia has revealed that advanced cancer of the stomach and bones have been cured successfully. Patients suffering from these kinds of cancer should daily take one tablespoon of honey with one teaspoon of cinnamon powder for one month three times a day.

FATIGUE:
Recent studies have shown that the sugar content of honey is more helpful rather than being detrimental to the strength of the body. Senior citizens, who take honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts, are more alert and flexible. Dr. Milton, who has done research, says that a half tablespoon of honey taken in a glass of water and sprinkled with cinnamon powder, taken daily after brushing and in the afternoon at about 3:00 P.M. when the vitality of the body starts to decrease, increases the vitality of the body within a week.

BAD BREATH:
People of South America , first thing in the morning, gargle with one teaspoon of honey and cinnamon powder mixed in hot water, so their breath stays fresh throughout the day.

HEARING LOSS:
Daily morning and night honey and cinnamon powder, taken in equal parts restores hearing. Remember when we were kids? We had toast with real butter and cinnamon sprinkled on it!

Find Help with Kelp-Getting Sea Veggies into Your Life has Never Been so Easy and Fun!

May 4th, 2010

Kelp noodles give you a very easy way to get a healthy dose of sea veggies into your eating lifestyle. Kelp is  an extremely nutrient dense superfood containing many minerals we need for cell cleansing and alkalinity. This is why they are an important additive. Swinging your body alkaline, means keeping it less prone to dis-ease, which sounds pretty good, right? We want an alkaline body environment so we can function at our best, having our bodies do what they were designed to do without having to deal with toxic waste and stress. Kelp noodles can HELP achieve this body happiness!

Kelp noodles can be found at most health food stores in the refrigerated section and they are so versatile since they have no flavor. They have a neutral taste, so will allow for many uses including salads, soups, stir fries, etc. They will absorb the flavor of what ever sauce or dressing your happy heart desires to put on ‘em. You can use them straight out of the package-they do not need to be cooked, but you can certainly cook them into your favorite dishes! They have a very interesting and mild texture that is pleasing to the palate, especially with your favorite flavoring. They are really fun to eat and make a great alternative to regular pasta! So much healthier, lighter and nutritive for you! It’s all about foods that serve you…and these most certainly will! :) They are low in calories (6 calories, YES, 6, in 4 ounces, have 0 cholesterol, 1 gm of carbs, o fat, 0 sugar, contain 15% calcium and 4% iron (again, in a 4 ounce serving-there are 3 servings in 1 package of noodles). They are allergen free, gluten free and they are a RAW food! :)

I like to make this really yummy kelp noodle seaweed salad with a miso dressing! If you are a fan on my Facebook page, there is a pic there…if you are not a fan of HTF on Faecbook, BECOME one!

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Healing-Thru-Food/251234115154

Here is the recipe for the salad:

1/2 bag kelp noodles, rinsed and drained

2 tbsp sea veggies (you can get these right next to the kelp noodles at Whole Foods), rinsed and drained (as they come packed in salt and will be really salty if you just eat them right out of the bag)

shredded carrot

sliced radish

chopped green onion

Mix all together in bowl.

For Miso Dressing (makes 1 cup):

4 1/2 tbsp miso paste

4 1/2 tbsp honey

3 tbsp rice vinegar

3 tbsp mustard

Whisk until smooth.

Enjoy!

There are many creative things you can do with kelp noodles! Please reply or email me at healingthrufood@gmail.com with some of YOUR fave ways to use them!

Eureka! Inspirations for finding YOUR eating lifestyle!

April 22nd, 2010

Hi friends,

I wish you all a very happy Earth Day! I hope you use this time to reflect on any positive changes you have made with regards to how you treat our sacred Mother Earth. Have you been recycling more? Using your cloth bags? Composting? Maybe bought a Prius? :) Whatever you do, just remember that we ALL can make a difference even if it’s just in small strides. Keep up the good work! Every little bit helps!

So, a lot of changes have been going on with me that I wanted to share with you all-for who ever is out there reading my words…

Lately, I have been really attracted to eating raw and juicing. I have been speaking about this with whoever will listen and I really truly think there is something to this method. It’s not a diet. It’s not a phase. It’s a lifestyle. It’s MY eating lifestyle. It finally found me and I am accepting it with open and loving arms and a willing belly. The reason I know this is my ‘way’ is because it seems so effortless to me. Some people think that juicing sounds like a chore, but for me, it’s ritual and less cumbersome than cooking. I FEEL good. I look good (if I must say so myself) and I am satisfied ALL the time. I also have a ton of energy, more clarity and my psychic intuition (which we all have but may not be programmed to listen to) is more dead on. I am not saying I just drink juice all the time…I do eat. But what I eat is 80% raw. Raw food prep for me is fun, creative and nourishing, and please, do not knock it before you try it. :)

I have always liked the 80/20 philosophy applied to pretty much LIFE. With food, it’s no different. Here’s how it breaks down in my world. I eat 80% raw. 80% of that raw food is vegan/ vegetarian, meaning, I still consume fish…sometimes (20%ish of the time)-when I feel like it. But most of the time, it’s something like sushi or canned tuna (raw but, I know, I know…mercury and toxicity…I have a moral dilemma with this too, sometimes, but that is why it’s only 20% of my eating lifestyle). I hope this is making sense… So, some foods are cooked as well. I am a huge fan of yams, and obviously, I have to cook those because they do not exactly taste great raw (I do not have a dehydrator yet, but am working on manifesting my Excalibur ;) ). My cooked food sources have seriously taken a back seat. I sometimes consume brown rice or quinoa, but not too much anymore. I believe that what I eat throughout the day combines well and gives me the proper nourishment, so please do not be too concerned about ‘complete’ protein. The beef and poultry industry has most of America so ass backwards about how much protein everyone needs and most of it is BS. 8-9% of our daily calorie intake should be protein and this means about 44g for women and 54g for men daily. ENOUGH with the protein obsession. We need ALL nutrients, and eating this way does supply everything I need.

This may or may not work for YOU however,  and I am not trying to convert anyone to eating how I do, but my point is to inspire you to really listen to YOUR needs. Don’t buy into fad diets or calorie counting or eating that takes away from the pleasure of EATING. Food should be fun and you will find your way. It does take time, and we are all different, with different chemical make ups and DNA, so the same thing simply CANNOT work for everyone. That’s just ludacris.

Trust and honor yourselves to make the best choices for you. Just stick to whole foods and you cannot go wrong. Remember that this is a LIFESTYLE, not just a diet to lose a few lbs. It must be SUSTAINABLE and you must give yourself space and forgive yourself if you ‘mess up’ or eat something that you know is not going to serve you best. As long as you have this awareness, this is a huge step in the right direction.

If you need help on finding the perfect fit for your lifestyle, please schedule an appointment with me. Call (818)809-8045 or email me at: healingthrufood@gmail.com

It’s fun to figure out what works because once you do, you can get on with life and not be bothered to put too much effort and thought into what you are going to be eating for the rest of your life. It takes time and practice but I am telling you from experience, once it clicks, it feels so good and it makes life so much easier and enjoyable.

I am here to help and welcome any questions!

Wishing you all the very best in health ALWAYS and a delightful Earth Day!

Peace,

Dori

Feeling Underjoyed?

April 5th, 2010

Sometimes at HTF, I like to speak a bit about healthy mind set because I believe there is an important connection between body, mind and spirit. With that being said, we have to nourish all these things to feel complete and balanced. I wanted to write a little about some very powerful healing modalities; life coaching and transformational coaching.

Do you ever feel like you have every reason in the world to be happy, but you still find yourself not as joyful as you’d like to be? Well, sometimes we can be doing everything we think we are supposed to be doing to achieve pure bliss and a joyful mind; deep breathing, meditation, journaling, exercising,  venting to friends, etc…

Unfortunately though, sometimes it’s not that simple.  I am sure most of us can agree that a lot of our so called issues probably stem back to early childhood experiences…not to get all “Freudian” on you guys, but it’s a common thread many of us share, I’m guessing, yes?

So, what do we do in this case? Do we seek traditional psychotherapy? Speak about how mom didn’t love us or how dad didn’t pay us enough attention? Obviously, sometimes, it can be way more dramatic than this, and I am not downplaying anything here. We are the products of some serious conditioning. But in my personal opinion, traditional therapy is not the complete answer. Although I have gone through that as well at times and it can be extremely helpful and comforting offering important tools one may need to cope with certain life situations. But it all seems very intellectual. Okay, so mom beat the shit out of me when I was 7 but now I can come to understand that she was hurting, too. Great. But there still lies some serious  neurological damage as  your brain has been programed to be afraid and be distrustful.

Talking about the issue and rehashing the past experiences is helpful, in ways, to acknowledge and to try to move on, but many of us still have feelings that rule us and make us act in certain ways, sometimes sabotaging our current relationships and  stealing what joy we could be truly experiencing if we could learn to rewire those neurons and create new and healthy thought patterns.

With life coaching, you get the chance to speak about anything that rides you: lack of motivation, lack of confidence, manifesting your beloved, creating a better business, whatever issue you want to work on…and this amazing person who is your life coach cheers you on all the way. They do not put answers to your deepest questions in your head, but rather give you space to find the answers within and this is TRUE knowledge because it comes from YOU. You have the answers and all the power—you just need to look inside.

Life coaching is extremely empowering because you are working on YOUR life and someone is with you all the way to shepherd you through the good AND bad-not that there is really good and bad per say, but they are there to share your experiences with you. And I know this sounds a lot like traditional psychotherapy, but with life coaching, you are doing a lot of  ‘homework’. You get to hone in on personal goals and write them down and TALK about them, and get excited about change! Your life coach points out ways you may not be seeing everything that is right in front of you.

My personal experience with Mickey Caputo (mickey@systemofstrength.com) was LIFE CHANGING.  He is so nurturing and he definitely helped me to work through some deep seeded issues that had been holding me back for a long while. He never judged or pushed his personal agenda (even if I wanted him to!). He just allowed me to have the space to grow personally and find what I was truly looking for, which was hidden inside already anyway. It’s about DISCOVERY and reconnection with your wonderful self and I cannot speak highly enough about Mickey’s amazing work and life coaching in general.

I had another experience recently where I attended a free 4 hour transformational workshop with a couple whose names are Miranda and Jana Saunders (www.DiscoverSoulSpa.com) and even in a group setting, they were able to achieve such powerful work! I was floored and I walked away feeling so much lighter. They gave me some very important tools on rewiring the brain enabling joy to enter that space instead. Once you remove the crap that has been sitting in there for so long, you get the chance to fill that empty void with happy things that SERVE you, versus robbing you of the joy you are entitled to.

Listen, people do some messed up things to others without even realizing they do it. So, true, we cannot be too harsh and express  too much blame. Everyone is here, in my opinion to teach you something. But, physiologically, this is real. Neurons multiply and grow and they can either be programmed for blissful things or pure hell. And you have the power to work through this and be HAPPY!

If you are feeling like you need that help to bring you over to true happiness, I highly recommend working with a professional such as Mickey or Miranda or Jana…or who every YOU trust to share your soul with. Our time is pretty short here, and I know I personally want to live each day feeling the best way I can and now I know I have complete control. You do not have to live in pain or fear or regret or guilt. Those are learned emotions and behaviors.

Think back to when you were a little kid…remember something positive, a happy childhood memory…and imagine living your life in pure bliss, as you felt at that very moment, ALL THE TIME! True, we are not robots-we are human, and we will have our ups and downs, but wouldn’t you rather have control and way more UPS? I know I felt this way.

I wish all you healthy readers complete and total happiness.  If I can assist in any way, even if it’s putting you in touch with who you are being called to connect with, let me help!

Go get happy NOW. Your life is waiting for you!
